Album 76: CareyThese photos were scanned and sent to Olive Tree Genealogy to publish on Lost Faces. I do not own the originals. Sheila Endres is the owner and submitter.
From Sheila: I know the index is wrong in a few places. I think someone re-used the photo album because some of the photos are labeled as something other than what the Index says. I have done a lot of digging and the best I can come up with is the following: According to the labeling, the actual people in this are: #1 Alice Carey (The photo itelf is labeled with the correct name.) #2 George and Alice Carey, children of Gershom and Lucy (Converse) Carey #3 probably Gershom and Lucy (Converse) Carey #4 Melancton S. Carey son of Francis and Adeline (Yaeger) Carey #5 Willie Vanbrunt (unknown connection) #6 Willie Lion (Lyon) (unknown connection) #7 Clara Griffith (unknown connection) #8 Adeline Carey (unknown connection) #9 Frank Carey (unknown connection) #10 Alberta Vanbrunt (unknown connection) #11 Ruth Vanbrunt (unknown connection) #12 G Grizzrel (Griswell?) (unknown connection) #13 Sallie Grizzrel (Griswell?) (unknown connection) (stuck behind Sallie's picture was a picture of Esther Lindsey's first daughter, Ruth Ann Mix, who died young. See Sheila's comments below) #14 "Le. Packard" (prob Oliver Howard Packard) #15 Lucretia Carey (Mrs. Oliver Howard Packard) #16 Possibly Susannah Bassett Carey. Only markings on photo are small and front bottom, saying "Warner" and "Greene, N. Y." If so, the photo must have been taken in the late 1840s and copied in card format to be given to her children later, because Susannah died in early 1850. I have read that copying older photos onto cardboard became popular during the Civil War so soldiers could take photos of their loved ones with them. Most of the photos in this collection seem to be Civil War era. #17 Sarah Packard (daughter of Howard and Lucretia Carey Packard) In back of this picture were two tin-types, one of Mr. and Mrs. Keck and the other of a Mrs. Hears (Heers? Hees?) #18 Calvin Packard (son of Howard and Lucretia Carey Packard) #19 Henry Packard (son of Howard and Lucretia Carey Packard) #20 Unknown, but might be Lydia Lucretia Carey (daughter of Calvin and Harriett Holcomb Carey) because the pic was taken in Greene, NY and she looks to be the right age. #21 Lizzie Fowler (unknown connection) #22 Jane and Sy or Cyl McBride (unknown connection) #23 James Lindsey (brother of Esther, William and Moses Lindsey.) #24 Moses Lindsey (brother of Esther, James and William Lindsey.) #25 William Lindsey (brother of Esther, James and Moses Lindsey). #26 unk man taken in Ithaca NY, probably a Carey #27 Maggie Gillett (see full names at bottom, also marked on back, "Miss Carey"), unknown connection #28 F Gillett (prob Maggie's son...) #29 unknown but probably William Lindsey, also shown in pick #25) 30 Calvin D. Carey. Individual scans coming soon!
Comments from Sheila: This is the picture that is probably Ruth Ann Mix. She represents the last photo encased in this album. I will also send you another picture, not in the photo album, but these are the people who compiled this album, l-r, Esther Cain Lindsey (1-Mix) (2-Carey) 1820-1890, Melancton S. Carey 1820-1878, and their daughter Ellen 1864-1963, who was the only one of Esther's 9 natural children to live long enough to marry and have children. Ellen is my husband's great-grandmother. The Careys also adopted a son, Frank, and he also married and had children.
